Scam Cam: Skimmers
As technology continues to advance, it is sometimes assumed that transactions are more secure and the chances of theft are lower. Unfortunately that is not the case. In fact, identity thieves are becoming craftier and are using the gains in technology to their advantage.
Skimmers are devices that are attached in close proximity to or directly over an ATM’s factory-installed card reader. It reads the magnetic strip on your card, and the more advanced criminals install tiny pinpoint cameras that can capture personal identification numbers, as well. One surveillance camera in Columbia, South Carolina, caught a criminal installing a skimming device in less than 40 seconds.
Skimmers are often very difficult to detect. The picture above shows how inconspicuous these fraudulent skimmers can be. Unfortunately, the ATM is not the only place skimmers are used. Gas pumps have also become popular targets for criminals to place skimmers, which are usually in place for a few hours at a time and removed to avoid getting caught.
Whenever possible, pay inside rather than at the pump and choose money back options at grocery stores or gas stations instead of using an ATM. If you must use an ATM or gas pump card reader, take a few moments to see if it looks unusual at all. Inspect the front of the ATM for unusual appear; scratches, marks, adhesive or tape residues could be indicators of tampering. If it looks suspicious, take a moment to see if you can easily move the card reader. Many skimmers are attached with double-sided tape, allowing for easy removal.
Be sure to keep a close eye on your bank statements to monitor any suspicious transactions. Remember, it only takes a few seconds for a cyber criminal to upload your electronic information to the Internet and send it across the world.
